My fav is is the one of Wilbur Norman. The area of “out of focus” around his whole head is very interesting and moves it even farther away from a portrait photo to an artistic piece. Well done!
I’ve been shooting as a hobby for decades now. Used to use a good ole Nikon F1 and Nikkor lenses. iPhones have sure simplified life for us part-timers. Look forward to seeing more of your portraits.
Welcome to Substack, Larry. You’ll find an awesome photography community here. @Andy Adams and @Andrew Eberlin for example. @Meg Oolders takes stock images as prompts for fiction. Oh and there’s a lad called @Ben Kerschberg who is establishing himself as a very generous celebrator of others’ creativity. You might have come across him! Have fun.
Larry, welcome to Substack! I hope you will enjoy it here. It is such a wonderful community. I am not a portrait photographer, but I enjoyed reading your post none the less!
I love this: "and only when he gave me his name did I realize he is a Santa Clara potter and I have one of his pieces in my collection." What a fun moment of serendipity!
Okay, now I'm inspired to get out my "real" camera. I enjoy taking photos for fun, and I'm decent enough at it that my daughter has asked me to do headshots for her twice. I get a lot of practice with the grandkids.

Thanks Jane for the very nice comment. I also like to blurred "bokeh" background/

Thanks you for the tips on other photographers. I will visit their sites.
I know this fellow @Ben Kerschberg – he is my son.

Hi Rebecca,
Thank you for the nice comment. It was a moment of serendipity!
People can surprise us. We may have a first impression, and then as we get to know them, the richness of their life and personality emerges.
I encourage you to try some headshots with a "real" camera; what do you shoot with?
Cheers,
Larry
I have a Canon Rebel T1i. I got it years ago primarily to get better shots of my kids' music and sports events.
I have shot with a friend's Rebel T1. Good camera.
Hey, this is my dad! What a great post that reflects your love of photography and portraiture, and in Santa Fe, no less. Welcome to Substack!
