Imagine 500 well-manicured acres of countryside dedicated to large sculptures by world-famous artists like David Smith, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Serra, Henry Moore, and many others. This is the Storm King Arts Center.
We visited Storm King for the Arlene Shechet show. The show runs from May 4 to November 10, 2024. The show notes say:
Arlene Shechet: Girl Group brings together the artist's recent work in wood, steel, ceramic, paper, and bronze with six new monumental sculptures created for Storm King Art Center. Through her signature emphasis on process and improvisation, Shechet (American, b. 1951) harnesses the expressive power of geometry, line, color, and form in works displayed across Storm King's hills, fields, and galleries. The artist maintains a spirit of constant discovery as she mines the possibilities of multiple sculptural materials, experimenting with their capacity to hold color and light while creating form and volume.
Below are some photos I took during our visit. The first gallery shows the ones inside the Museum, while the second gallery shows two of her sculptures on the Storm King grounds.
I like the pastel colors of Shechet’s outdoor sculptures and the textures of those inside the Museum. The New York Times wrote a nice article about Shechet just before the show opened: NYT Article on Arlene Shechet's Girl Group Show.
While strolling the grounds we saw some famous sculptures. Can you guess who made them?
Breath taking!
